Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20 1964) is an American politician and lawyer who is currently the 49th vice-president of the United States. She is also the first female vice-president and highest-ranking female official in U.S. History, as well the first African American and second Asian American vice president. As a member of the Democratic Party, she has previously served as attorney general for California from 2011 until 2017, and also as a United States senator representing California until 2021. Harris was born and was raised in Oakland, California. Her first job was in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later promoted to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. Harris was elected Attorney General of California in 2010, and then she was re-elected in 2014. Harris was the junior United States Senate from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez in the 2016 Senate election to become the second African American woman and the first South Asian American to serve in the United States Senate. She was a senator and was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare as well as federal cannabis de-scheduling an opportunity to become a citizen for immigrants who are not legally documented, the DREAM Act, a ban against assault weapons, as well as progressive tax reform. She was praised nationally for her provocative questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual assault.
